MULTIMEDIA SOCIOLOGY LEXICON:INTRODUCTION |
The Department of Social Science, University of Firenze, Faculty of
Magistero, is planning and carriing out a Multimedia Sociology Lexicon.
The project was born of a seminar in Sociology of Cultural Process, dealing
with the use and the impact of computer technology in teaching Human Studies.
The seminar was held by Andrea Spini, sociologist and researcher at the
department, and was integrated by the intervention of Mario Rotta, who
co-operates with the Laboratorio di Tecnologie dell'Educazione of the same
Faculty, expert in Multimedia. Also precious was the co-operation of a
group of students and last-year undergraduates.
The project developed following three parallel directions: I -origin,
field delimitation and form of the contents of an ipothetical M. Sociology
Lexicon; II - a temporary map of the essential "knots" to be
found among the data that will be contained in the Lexicon; III - some
diverse INTERFACCIA ipotheses were taken into consideration.
Step by step the Lexicon is taking shape: it will be a multimedia CD-ROM,
but, in the next future, it may be networked. By means of Internet, the
group that is carriing out the project intend to stimulate a contribution
of ideas, resources and energy, so that we can achieve better conceptual
definition and real accomplishment of the task. When the Lexicon is completed
or when it has taken shape, we are going to test its effectiveness, providing
a group of students with it and comparing the results of their experience
to the results of work carried out by different groups provided with traditional
textbooks and dictionaries. Our interest is focused on the "quality"
of learning rather then the "quantity", and we believe that multimedia
technology can be of great help with such a task, above all because the
complexity and, at the same time, the immediacy of such technology, are
suitable features for a Lexicon that is supposed to deal with a complex
subject. The contents must be dealed with from a complex perspective, and
clarified from the conceptual point of view.
